What is the patient-oriented research (POR) casebook?

This casebook showcases real-life examples of research projects involving engagement with patient and lived experience partners in BC. Each casebook project includes practical and approachable content where learners can see POR in action during the different stages of the research process.

The casebook is designed to:

  • Provide a spotlight for patient-oriented research in our local contexts.
  • Inspire researcher teams to take partnered approaches to research.
  • Offer practical examples to support individuals who are learning about patient-oriented research.

Projects from the casebook are featured throughout the lived experience in research road map tool, developed by the BC SUPPORT Unit.

What is patient-oriented research?

Patient-oriented research (POR) is about making sure that research is conducted, with, by and for people with lived experience of a health issue and the health care received.

It involves active and meaningful partnerships with patients, families, and communities. POR ensures health research addresses research questions and health outcomes that matter to patients and aims to improve healthcare policy, services, and practice.
