Overview

The Northern Research to Results Challenge is led by Northern Health in partnership with Michael Smith Health Research BC and Spirit of the North Foundation. This competitive funding opportunity is designed to support high-impact, research that is relevant to northern and rural health challenges and leads to measurable improvements in care for patients or communities served by Northern Health. Projects must demonstrate real-world impact within 24 months.

Award amount

  • Total award: up to $100,000
  • Projects must demonstrate real-world impact within 24 months

One application will be funded through the competition. Additional partners and/or donor funds may increase the number of awards funded.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for this competition, project must:

  • Clearly address the challenges of delivering care in rural and northern BC
  • Include a patient or community partner
  • Include a Northern Health staff/medical staff as the primary applicant (PI) or co-applicant (Co-I)
  • Demonstrate research capacity building for trainees/staff/medical staff within NH or the North
  • Include a NH executive sponsor for project support and KT activities.

Priority alignment

Proposed projects should demonstrate awareness of the current operational context of the health system, including workforce constraints, affordability pressures, and the need to deliver high‑quality care in more integrated, efficient, and sustainable ways.

While the call is intentionally broad, Northern Health is particularly interested in research that helps the system respond to current pressures, such as:

  • Improving access and flow across acute, community, and long‑term care
  • Optimizing how scarce health human resources are deployed and supported
  • Reducing unwarranted variation or duplication in care while maintaining high quality care
  • Strengthening shared, coordinated, or regionally consistent approaches to care delivery , demonstrating value and impact in a constrained fiscal environment

Important: Only selected ideas will be invited to submit a full proposal due February 1, 2027.
