Advancing health equity means ensuring health systems respond to the diverse needs and experiences of the people they serve. Research plays an important role in building the evidence needed to support that work.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), in partnership with co-funders that include Health Research BC, is supporting 22 research teams through the Advancing 2S/LGBTQI+ Health Through Research Operating Grant. This $15 million grant supports interdisciplinary, community-engaged research addressing the health priorities of 2S/LGBTQI+ individuals and communities across Canada.
Through its partnership with CIHR, Health Research BC is enabling BC research teams to receive funding as part of the national initiative, including a co-funded award to Dr. Travis Salway at Simon Fraser University. Travis and his team are leading the four-year project Pathways to equitable primary healthcare for 2S/LGBTQI+ people in Canada.
Working alongside health-care administrators, care providers, and community organizations, as well as using 2S/LGBTQI+-inclusive federal health data, the team will examine health outcomes and access to primary care for 2S/LGBTQI+ people. Findings will be shared with healthcare leaders across Canada to inform future approaches.
Research that reflects lived experiences leads to more inclusive and equitable health outcomes. Our partnership with CIHR makes it possible to expand the impact of BC research that addresses the health priorities of 2S/LGBTQI+ communities.
