Every research career begins with a question and the opportunity to pursue it.
Over the past 25 years, many researchers across British Columbia have received support from Michael Smith Health Research BC at pivotal moments, helping them turn promising ideas into independent research careers. The funding offered more than financial support. It created space to think deeply, test bold ideas, build partnerships, and gain confidence in their potential.
As Health Research BC celebrates 25 years of impact, we’re featuring researchers whose careers were shaped by that early investment.
“Health Research BC support fundamentally changed the trajectory of my entire career,” says Dr. Nathan Lachowsky.
Over time, support like this has helped researchers build programs of research, establish collaborations, and tackle some of BC’s most pressing health challenges. It has also helped create opportunities for other early-career researchers.
“Training and mentoring the next generation of research leaders is a natural extension of that support, and it’s a responsibility I take very seriously,” says Dr. Tonia Nicholls.
Today, many of those researchers are leaders in their fields. Their work has advanced scientific discovery, informed health policy and clinical practice, strengthened health systems, and improved care for people and communities.
We spotlight five researchers whose stories show how a single opportunity can grow into decades of influence in health research — creating a ripple effect that extends from individual careers to research teams, communities, and the future of health research in BC.
