Health Research BC is enabling five BC-based research teams to receive funding from the Strengthening Equitable and Resilient Public Health Systems (STEPS) Team Grants research initiative. This national initiative focuses on generating evidence to strengthen public health systems and advance health equity across Canada.
Led by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Population and Public Health, the STEPS initiative supports interdisciplinary teams of researchers, decision-makers, practitioners, and community partners working together to maximize system-level opportunities for better health outcomes.
By partnering with CIHR, Health Research BC is connecting national research funding with provincial needs, enabling the BC-based groups to join a national cohort of 14 funded teams.
Specifically, the BC teams are focused on Indigenous-led approaches to public health system transformation, including governance and leadership in health emergencies, climate-related readiness, integrating Indigenous knowledges, and cardiovascular health and wellness.
“Strong public health systems rely on research that connects evidence, decision-making, and community experience. The ability for Michael Smith Health Research BC to actively partner with CIHR on the STEPS initiative ensures alignment between the funding program and BC’s priorities. As a result, we are strengthening capacity to generate evidence that advances systems and responses to public health emergencies, while ensuring funding reflects BC’s public health priorities and aligns with the BC Population and Public Health Framework.”
