OPPORTUNITY
An Embedded Research Program (ERP) pilot, through 18 months of relationship-building with Kal’númet clinic, co-developed an operations research model of primary care provider panel size, tailored to the relational nature of Indigenous primary care. The pilot established trust, a data sharing agreement, and a collaborative modelling approach co-directed with clinic partners. There is strong partner interest in extending this work across the FNI-PCN to wider capacity and resource questions that reduce burden on the workforce while strengthening care. This needs dedicated time to deepen relationships across the Network and co-create a shared research agenda driven by in community priorities.
FORMAT
Two in-person sessions for 12-15 participants, held with Network partners, Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and SFU and VCH-affiliated researchers, following Squamish Nation cultural protocols.
EVENT DESCRIPTION
Session 1 — Sharing & Orientation
New partners are introduced to the collaborative operations research modelling approach and the ERP pilot findings. The session is educational and relational, with time for discussion. Resources are shared for partners to consider beforehand.
Session 2 — Co-creation Retreat
A facilitated retreat to co-create a shared operations research agenda. Working from priorities partners bring forward, panel size and other capacity and resource management questions will be identified and prioritized. A graphic facilitator will produce a shareable visual summary reflecting partner contribution.
Approach
The long-term partnership will implement our co-creation and a collaborative modelling approach developed during the pilot, where community and clinic partners hold the questions and priorities and researchers contribute methodology. Proposed planning activities will follow culturally safe practices. Engagement and any handling of community information are governed by Indigenous data and research governance, including OCAP (ownership, control, access and possession) and the Squamish Nation research council, consistent with Chapter 9 of the Tri-Council Policy Statement.
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
A co-created summary of operations research priorities, captured as an infographic and owned by partners. The priorities will inform planning for a phase 2 ERP project across the Network and provide a foundation for later engagement on how VCH, given its existing role supporting the Network, could better align with partner priorities.
