Esophageal cancer is one of the fastest-rising cancers in North America. Current treatments, such as surgery and chemotherapy, are often limited in effectiveness and can cause serious side effects. Omar Abuhussein’s research focuses on understanding how this cancer develops at the molecular level, using advanced single-cell and spatial genomics, to help identify new ways to detect the disease early and develop more targeted treatments.
