Jose Benito Tovillo

Dr. Jose Benito Tovillo is a postdoctoral fellow. He obtained his PhD in Nursing at the University of Alberta in 2024. Jose is also a registered nurse and a nurse educator.

Jose’s research is focused on HIV and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs), especially around equitable access to HIV/STBBI treatment and prevention strategies among the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada. His doctoral dissertation, A Narrative Inquiry Study into the Experiences Related to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Access Among Young Men Who Have Sex with Men (YMSM) in Canada, identified narrative threads highlighting YMSM’s PrEP access experiences in relation to identity-making and social responsibility.

Currently, Jose is working closely with the Community-Based Research Center (CBRC), a national community-based non-profit organization that promotes the health of 2S/LGBTQ+ people across Canada through community-driven research, intervention development, and knowledge mobilization. He also continues to engage in provincial and national discussions and research that advocate for the sexual health and well-being of the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada.”
