Jennifer Gruno

Dr. Jennifer Gruno is an Associate Professor in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education in the Faculty of Health at the University of Victoria, located on the traditional territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Xʷsepsəm/Esquimalt) and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples. Her research and teaching explore how nature-based physical activity and outdoor learning can strengthen the health and well-being of children and youth while fostering human–nature connectedness, stewardship, and climate resilience. Working through long-standing schools-university partnerships, Dr. Gruno collaborates with educators, community organizations, and researchers to co-design and implement evidence-informed approaches that support Nature-Based Literacy, teacher professional learning, and meaningful engagement with Land. Her work bridges health promotion, teacher education, and implementation science to help translate research into sustainable educational practice. Dr. Gruno is passionate about preparing current and future educators to nurture reciprocal relationships with Land and community, believing that fostering connectedness to nature is fundamental to the health of people and the planet.
