Elina Birmingham

I am an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University and Director of the Autism in Education Lab. My research focuses on neurodiversity-affirming approaches to education, post-secondary transitions, and employment for autistic and neurodivergent people. I am particularly interested in work-integrated learning experiences, mentorship models, workplace inclusion, and the leadership and retention of neurodivergent individuals in health and health-adjacent systems.

I currently lead projects that co-design resources with autistic students, employers, and community partners to reduce employment barriers. I am a co-inventor on a patented AI-driven selective sound management technology designed to support people with decreased sound tolerance. Through partnerships such as the current Health Research BC Engage Award with the Neurodiversity Change Foundation, I am expanding this work into neuroinclusive health human resources, identifying research and knowledge mobilization priorities that strengthen workforce participation, retention, and leadership pathways for neurodivergent people in British Columbia’s health systems.
