Austin Miller

Dr. Miller completed his PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with an emphasis in Biophysics and Bioengineering. In his PhD, he developed genetically encodable sensors to monitor gene expression with MRI with a particular focus on demonstrating that these sensors were functional in cell types relevant to cell-based therapeutics.
Dr. Miller is now a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Lynn Lab at the University of British Columbia where he is continuing to pursue the advancement of cell-based therapies. Stem cell-derived pancreatic islets (SC islets) can be transplanted in patients with Type 1 Diabetes to restore autonomous insulin production as an alternative management strategy to insulin injections or infusions. The overall goal of his research is to improve the protocols for generating SC islets in the lab and to improve their ability to survive following transplantation.
