Alison Phinney is a Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and director of the Centre for Research on Personhood in Dementia (https://www.crpid.ubc.ca/). Using qualitative participatory methods, she has advanced understanding of the lived experience of dementia – the impact of cognitive impairment on everyday life, people’s involvement in meaningful activity, and the role of families and communities in supporting them. She recently completed a national project using participatory co-design methods to develop, adapt, and implement community interventions to foster social inclusion (https://www.buildingcapacityproject.com/ ) and reduce stigma (https://www.flippingstigma.com/) around dementia. Her ongoing research includes an international study (SSHRC, 2023-2027) examining implications of centring the lived experience of dementia in policy, practice, and community development.
