Our commitment to reconciliation

We envision a health research system that values Indigenous ways of knowing and respects Indigenous self-determination.

We are committed to supporting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis-led health research that is self-governed, culturally grounded, and aligned with community priorities. This commitment is a core organizational priority and a long-term investment in reconciliation and equity in health research.

What we’re doing

Increasing opportunities

We partner with the BC Network Environment on Indigenous Health Research (funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research) to co-fund Indigenous researchers at the Master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels.

In addition, we co-fund Indigenous research personnel to create a supportive environment for Indigenous-led research in BC.

Indigenizing ethics

Aligned with our commitments, we have gathered resources to help researchers, research ethics offices, and boards engage in research involving First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

Reducing barriers

We launched a dedicated Indigenous review panel for our funding competitions to increase cultural safety and foster trust among Indigenous researchers.
