Research with impact often starts at home. For Dr. Theodore Cosco, it began with his grandmother’s journey with dementia.
This personal connection fueled his focus on aging and mental health. His work sits at the intersection of health and technology, seeking positive and practical ways for us to stay healthier and happier for longer.

“As we get older, our social spheres tend to diminish,” Theodore explains. This isolation is a critical challenge, as social connectedness has strong links with mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing.
While this work focuses on seniors, its findings are universal.
“We may not be an older adult yet, but everyone aspires to be one,” Theodore notes. Taking steps earlier in life to improve mental and physical wellbeing offers benefits across generations.
This sentiment sits at the heart of Health Research BC’s recent $6.3 million investment to strengthen seniors’ home and community care. The program is supporting five research teams across BC to apply evidence-based care approaches that will enable seniors to age with dignity, independence, and connectedness in their own communities.
