Dr. Brian R. Christie is a Professor in the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria and a neuroscientist whose research is focused on understanding how traumatic brain injury (TBI) disrupts brain function and identifying strategies to promote recovery. His work bridges fundamental neuroscience with clinical research, bringing together laboratory-based investigations of synaptic plasticity and neuron–glia communication with studies involving individuals living with the long-term consequences of concussion and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Through this translational approach, his research aims to uncover biological mechanisms that can be targeted to preserve cognitive function, improve recovery, and reduce the lifelong burden of brain injury.
Dr. Christie’s interest in traumatic brain injury emerged from a broader career devoted to understanding how experiences shape the brain. Throughout his scientific career, he has investigated the mechanisms underlying learning, memory, hippocampal plasticity, and adult neurogenesis. These studies demonstrated that the adult brain retains a remarkable capacity for structural and functional adaptation.
