Dr. Erica Lau is an implementation scientist, Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of British Columbia, and Scientific Director of Emergency Care BC. Her research focuses on co-designing, operationalizing, and evaluating Learning Health Systems (LHS) for emergency care.
She studies how Learning Health System components, including governance, priority-setting, learning cycles, and implementation support, can enable continuous system-level learning and coordinated action. She also examines how equity, patient-centred care pathways, and meaningful outcomes can be embedded in Learning Health System design and routine learning processes.
Her current work applies these approaches to a provincial Learning Health System for emergency department opioid-related care, co-developed with people with lived and living experience, regional health authorities, providers, and communities across British Columbia. The resulting approaches are intended to inform Learning Health Systems across other emergency care priorities.
